What does the school nursing do?
Our School Nurses work for the NHS and are based in health centres. We work with lots of professionals including teachers in school, social workers and GP’s to try and improve health and wellbeing.
We support children from when they start school in reception at school through to 19 years old. Every school in Walsall has access to school nurse and your school should have posters on display which have the name, a picture and the contact details of the school nurse. We also support children and young people who are taught at home by their parents or carers.
The school nursing team includes:
School Nurses – a registered nurse who previously trained and worked in the hospital before working in the community. They have extra training in looking after child and young peoples health
Community Staff Nurse – a trained nurse who supports the school nurse
Community Nursery Nurse – who are trained to help children and young people of all ages and they run our young people’s groups and deliver some of our health education in schools
Clinical Support Workers – have some training to work with children and young people in schools and in the community and they support the School Nurse.
School Nurse Administrators – who support the School Nurse Team by arranging clinics, appointments and taking phone calls to answer general queries about the service.
