Looking after your own health

Knowing what steps we can take to look after our physical and mental wellbeing can help us feel better and more in control of our lives.

Physical health

If you have questions or concerns about your physical health, you can:

  • Access online advice through the ChatHealth school nurse texting service
  • Come and see your school nurse at weekly school drop-ins or use ChatHealth text service to arrange to meet a nurse if you are not attending school
  • Visit your GP (with or without your parent or carer) or contact NHS 111
  • Visit the NHS website

Sexual health

If you need sexual health advice and support, you can find out more about times and locations of drop in services from the following:

Personal care

Personal care includes things like brushing your teeth and showering or bathing regularly.  You can find more information about dental health on the NHS website. The Forum Health Centre website also has some great general health information for young people.

Exercise

Regular exercise can improve your sense of physical and mental wellbeing. Ideally you should to do two different types of physical activity each week: aerobic exercise to raise your heart rate and exercises which strengthen your muscles and bones. Information about how much physical activity you should aim to do is available on the NHS website.

Eating well

Try to eat regularly and aim to have a balanced diet with food from each food group. This will help you to keep your mind and body healthy. You can find help and advice to help you eat well on the NHS website.

Get enough sleep

Teenagers need between eight and 10 of sleep per night. You may not realise it, but the amount of sleep you get can affect everything from your weight and metabolism to your brain function and mood. Limiting screen time (phones, tablets and TV), exercising and a good routine can all help you sleep better. Find out more on the NHS website.

Emotional wellbeing

It’s important to share how you are feeling with someone. If you’re not sure where to start, or are struggling to understand how you feel, there is lots of support and advice out there. The Young Minds website is a great place to start.
