Sun Safety: Just the facts

You might think you don’t need to worry about protecting yourself from the sun, but you CAN burn in the UK, even when it’s cloudy.

Although getting outdoors is important for our mental health, you should follow these five steps to help protect yourself from the sun:

  • Use suncream: Always apply a generous amount of water-resistant suncream, at least SPF30. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying it remember to re-apply regularly throughout the day.
  • Wear a hat: Whether it’s a cap, bucket or even a cowboy hat. Whatever you choose, wearing a hat can help to keep the sun off your head, face, neck and ears.
  • Stay in the shade: The sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm. Find a shady spot to avoid getting burnt.
  • Don’t forget about your eyes: They need protection too. Wearing sunglasses can help shield your eyes from the sun’s strong rays.
  • Cover up: Whenever possible, protect your skin by covering up with clothes.

The damage done to your skin when you’re young could lead to skin cancer developing in later life, so it’s vital to get clued up now and protect yourself from the sun.
