Video: Body Image

How you feel about yourself and your body matters, and this is all linked to your body image and self-esteem.

In this video we look at what these terms mean, as well as when and how to get further support if you’re struggling with either of them:

Summary:

  • Sometimes you might not like something about your body or appearance, and this may be a sign that you need to speak to somebody to get some support.
  • Healthy self-esteem is balanced – it’s ok to recognise your weaknesses (we all have them) but you must also remember and celebrate your strengths (everyone has these too!)
  • Try not to compare yourself to images you see online. Remember that not everything you see on social media is the truth, and comparing yourself to others ignores that fact that we’re all different
  • Negative thoughts can change how you feel and behave, so it’s important to challenge them by analysing and thinking over your thoughts instead of believing them without question
  • Be kind to yourself, what would you say to a friend if they were feeling like this?
  • You can talk to a friend, family member, teacher or school nurse about how you’re feeling, and there is lots of support online or through your GP.
