Enfield’s School Health Service

Supporting the Health and Well-being of Students in Enfield

Enfield’s School Health Service plays a crucial role in promoting the health and well-being of children and young people aged 5 to 19 years. Delivered by the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, this service is designed to support students in mainstream schools across Enfield, ensuring they receive the care and guidance they need to thrive.

Enfield’s School Health Service is dedicated to ensuring that all children and young people in the borough have access to the health care and support they need. By promoting healthy lifestyles and providing essential health services, the school nursing team helps students stay healthy, happy, and ready to learn.

Key Services Provided

Health Promotion and Education:

  • The service offers health promotion and education sessions to encourage healthy lifestyle choices among students. Topics covered include nutrition, physical activity, mental health, and substance misuse prevention.

Secondary School Health Drop-Ins:

  • Regular health drop-in sessions are held in secondary schools, where students can seek advice and information on various health-related issues in a confidential setting.

National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP):

  • As part of the NCMP, school nurses measure the height and weight of children in primary schools to monitor growth and identify any potential health concerns early on.

Duty Service:

  • A telephone-based duty service is available to provide information, advice, and guidance to professionals, parents, and young people. This service ensures that support is accessible when needed.

Health Care Needs Assessments:

  • The school nursing team conducts thorough health care needs assessments for children referred to the service. This helps identify any specific health issues and ensures that appropriate care plans are put in place.

Training for School Staff:

  • School nurses provide training for school staff on managing common health conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, and anaphylaxis. This ensures that staff are well-prepared to support students with these conditions.

The Importance of School Nursing

School nurses are public health professionals who play a vital role in the early identification of health issues and the promotion of healthy behaviours. By working closely with schools, they help create a supportive environment where students can achieve their full potential.
